How often should I water my garden during the Texas Summer?

by | Jun 30, 2026 | Articles, Organic Care

As the summer heat sets in, the question on most of our brains is “How often should I water?”

First, look at your soil. Do you have Clay, Sandy, Caliche, Loamy, or Arid Soils?

Sandy soil drains fast while Caliche is hard to penetrate and Clay can get waterlogged fast! That’s why planting native eco regional plants is crucial! They are adapted to the region and soil, require less hands-on assistance and water.

Some gardeners have sentimental nonnative plants and vegetable gardens that need extra attention, but with healthy soil, especially soil amended with MicroLife you can still maintain a water-wise garden. MicroLife helps make caliche soils more porous, improves drainage in clay soils, and builds biomass in sandy soils to retain moisture.

Consider your climate, humidity and temperature. When the leaves of your plants droop midday from heat stress but perk up again in the cool of the night, your plants are hydrated. But when they don’t recover by morning it’s time to water!

Long and slow deep root watering is always best no matter where you live. Encouraging roots to go deeper and reducing evaporation. You water less!

Central Texas, 1x a week.

Houston, 2x’s a week.

West Texas, 2-3x’s a week.

Dallas, 1-2x’s a week.

South Texas, 2x’s a week.

Those of us in water restricted areas have some allowances to water by hand as needed but to reduce this you can use good mulch, shade cloth, and MicroLife!
