Low-Maintenance Lawn Guide: How to Make the Switch

As interest in environmental sustainability grows, many homeowners also want yards that require less work. That’s why low-maintenance lawns are becoming so popular and I’m here for it.

So how do you achieve this? As a conservationist, I’m an advocate for the “Kill Your Lawn” movement because it aligns with my goals of building eco-regional sustainable habitats that support local ecology. It is important to note that traditional lawns aren’t native to the Americas and require a lot of inputs and irrigation to stay healthy. Now, I know “Kill Your Lawn” isn’t everyone’s shot of tequila, but we can take baby steps and meet somewhere in the middle.

Native American Seed provides many native grass options for low-maintenance lawns that require very little input after germination. There are lower-growing, walkable lawn grasses like Thunder Turf, as well as beautiful prairie grass mixes for larger properties and restoration projects. Personally, I think every homeowners should reserve a nice little pocket prairie for biodiversity support.  The best part? Once these grasses are established, you don’t have to mow or irrigate! Another great alternative is using groundcover like Horseherb, Frogfruit, Woolly Stemodia, and other wonderful natives that naturally grow in place of traditional lawns. We have a 100-200 year seed bank sitting in our soil, and if you allow the land to show you its offerings, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised by the low-maintenance beauties that thrive!

I’ve personally restored my lawn with MicroLife Fertilizer, which helped the native seeds already present in the soil germinate. I now have a beautiful, lush Horseherb lawn that not only looks soft and green, but also supports pollinators with it’s adorable yellow flowers.

If you are a die-hard lawn lover but still want to do your part, carve out sections of your yard and dedicated them to green space and native water-wise beds. Every year, my garden beds seem to expand a few more feet as I add more native plants to my landscape. As they mature, my garden require less irrigation and my lawn continues to shrinks, making my job easier and my water bill a lot less frightening!

To be successful, you must know your soil and climate and understand what plants thrive in it! And one of the biggest assist in staying on track is feeding that soil with MicroLife! Supporting underground ecology and building microbial powerhouses will be crucial in your journey toward an unstoppable Low-Maintenance Lawn! Saving you water, time, and resources for many winning seasons to come!
